What the heck is up with IHOP? I thought this stuff happened at bars? Anyways, as a veteran US Navy Military Police Officer - I decided to post this for fun, but also for a bit of commentary......forgive the lengthy reminisces early in the morning......
First, I don't know what sparked this, but, the officer - you *NEVER* strike someone like this in public (or anywhere else). He was *REACTING* - an open-palm face-slap on a woman is NOT an authorized technique.
For what it's worth I guess I'll take it back - I did get hit *ONCE* - but it was by an inmate in a detention cell who reached through and slapped me - but I don't think it really counts.... I lost my cool. I reached across my belt grabbed my PR-24 with my right hand and unclipped my belt with my left and let it and my weapons drop to the floor, kicked them behind me and stepped back and said "open the cell...." - cuz Jar-Head was about to become closely acquainted with "Billy" (my PR-24).....fortunately for me and said-drunken-Jar-Head, my watch commander had a cooler head than I did and instead watched said drunken Jar-Head pee through the bars and rub his butt cheeks on the bars and the other Marines clean it up. Thats the nice thing about the Marines....they know how to take orders. No, seriously. I told Staff Seargent, "Y'all are gonna clean that up" and he said, "No I'm not, that's what Privates and Lance Corporals are for!" (MP Badge outranks everything else, hence me, an E-4 was giving orders to an E-6....who had a good sense of humor).
At any rate....
I am a bit aghast at how this is handled. You *CAN'T* react like this! As an MP - we'd create an international incident and end up in the brig for the rest of our lives if this was videotaped and it got out of us beating a foreign national up overseas - or even one of our own because it presents instability in a region.
USS Belleau Wood - from whence said fair maiden attempted to end her life from the flight deck....(Long drop, fast stop) |
But - wow.....I know it's easy to armchair quarterback but I've been in exactly this situation. Given that there were three of them there - he should have "disengaged" and stood back - though there's a lot of pressure in a crowd like that. You don't want the crowd to think you're just going to take it and you don't know how fast it's going to turn.....you know those drunken carousers at IHOP drinking fermented alcoholic syrup at 3am!
No, seriously - I couldn't believe he ended up on top of her face up either! Just asking for it.
He should have disengaged and got some space and his partners immediately gotten his back and cleared some space using an escalation in force - get one shove from the crowd and you're justified - all you gotta do is draw your baton as if you're going to protect yourself with it - not strike anyone - a defensive posture to push a crowd back if needs be if you can get away with it - and things get ready to clear - give the guy a chance to disengage and get some space and then the way she was going she was going to open herself up in a matter of seconds but.....
MAN! Punch to the face? I don't blame him but - can't do that......can not do that.....wow.....this was super messy though.....*NEVER* end up on the ground in a fight in a crowded situation like that at any price.....you could end up dead. She's small enough if his partners were doing their jobs he'd have space to put her over a table and she'd have opened herself up in less than a minute for a takedown......wow......wow.....wow.....
I had something similar to this happen to me except I was able to single-handedly take down three combatants at one time (looked like Jackie Chan....without the slanted eyes) and clear myself a space using some above mentioned techniques - because my idiot partner wasn't doing his job. I threatened to let him get killed if he ever asked for help in the future....and next thing I knew I was being charged with excessive use of force and "Rodney Kinging" someone. I was cleared but - yes - I've been there I don't know how many times - done that - and there's a reason the US Navy is more professional than the local neighborhood watch in this instance at least - we got a lot more riding on us if we screw up.
Can't do this in uniform....his partners should have cleared a lot more space around him though.....
OOOOH video removed! One day after posting!! MAN!
