An 11 year old daughter accidentally shot her 14 year old sister in the head with a 20 gauge shotgun.
My question: Why does an 11 year old not yet know about guns that are in the house and that they are not a toy? I'm not even asking about gun-locks or safety cabinets like the police are talking on the radio.
That's too old!
My kids had started shooting at 4 and 5 years old and know darned good and well what a 20 gauge can do.
They have never touched our guns at home and mine are easily accessible for home defense which is a reality and a neccessity where I live.
We took them out and bought a bunch of cantaloupes and watermelons and let them see what each of the different guns does - after drawing faces on them with markers - to illustrate just how deadly a loaded firearm can be.
Given that more people are killed in automobiles than by firearms, and a traffic fatality is no less tragic or senseless than a firearm accident....the attitude of gun-opponents towards firearms stymies me.
How many ad campaigns are there on drinking and driving?
How about an ad campaign for firearm safety and gun proficiency? I'd have taken a class in High School to learn to effectively use the 12 gauge or M-16 or 1911.....
